Howdy Bolo Ties!

by Leah Goryachkovsky

Yes, it’s true. Bolo ties are officially back after decades of not being seen in high fashion. I’m not sure what has inspired my sudden desire for a leather string held by a large pendant around my neck, but I officially can’t imagine my closet without it. What used to be an item exclusive to the American territories of Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, is now appearing in some of the largest cities in the world. This rustic, rugged cowboy accessory is being reimagined by many and should be a new staple in your wardrobe. Personally, I know that I will definitely be rocking this new look around campus this upcoming fall because nothing says autumnal vibes like a P.G. leather accent piece. If you don’t agree, just ask Posty.

You may be asking, “How would I even style this?” We couldn’t be happier that you asked. Some examples are pictured above. These three fresh-faced bolo boys did it right. Celebrities began to be pictured wearing this item in 2020 when major designer brands (Prada worn by Quavo, Nick Jonas, Lil Nas X, Frank Ocean, and Dylan Sprouse) initially popularized them. Although the “suit and tie” aesthetic is a classic go-to, another style to consider could be to contrast a colorful bolo tie with an already colorful or basic look.  The models pictured below were styled just as I would imagine myself wearing a bolo tie. The bright teal against the color-blocked coral fuses the modern and country look together to create a perfect balance.

The endless color options along with the various pendant designs available make this look incredibly versatile for outfit coordination. The bolo tie market starts from the price range of a mere $5, so why not give it a try? Even if you aren’t familiar with the southern charm of informal formal wear, make sure to keep an eye out for this piece.
