Virtual Valentine’s Day

by Ashleigh Lackey

Ah, Valentine’s Day, the most love-filled day of the year where couples of all ages pack romantic dinner spots full of tables for two. As beautiful as the abundant rose bouquets may be, February 14th can also be much less pleasant for those feeling as though they lack the other half of their duo. Traditionally a celebration of the couple, Valentine’s Day must take on a drastically different form this year. The pandemic offers a refreshingly individualized perspective on the polarizing holiday. Instead of orienting your opinion on VDay around whether or not you have someone to spend it with, why not base it in self love and a reinvigorated passion for blush and crimson clothes? Here are some pink and red styles to try that will make you fall in love with someone much more exciting than a significant other: yourself.

Accessories: The easiest way to incorporate the festive colors is by adding pink and red accessories. Pop a pink padded headband for contrast or opt for louboutin tips and red lips to contrast an all black outfit. Colorful rings add some life to a monochromatic outfit or top off a bold pattern.

Relaxed Rose: The pastel shades of pink, and all colors for that matter, are coming back in a big way. With the low temperatures in the City in the wake of a snowstorm, rosy knits are a practical way to integrate the festivities into your everyday wardrobe. Try a layered vest or a different neckline for a twist on the winter classic.

Pull a “Plastics” and go full Barbie: This interpretation is not for the faint of heart. Full on pink can be intimidating, and there’s a reason why the movie Mean Girls limits it to Wednesday’s. However, when complimented by complete monochrome or neutral accessories, the color will give you an empowering boost.

Lastly, there is no better way to participate in VDay than to sport a classic red lip. Take a page out of AOC’s book and use it to project confidence and independence. Nowhere is there a rule book that says that Valentine’s Day is strictly for couples: it is a celebration of love and affection, something that we should try to direct towards ourselves instead this year.
