Student Spotlight: Uila Marx

In this week’s Student Spotlight, we sat down with Uila Marx (BC ’20) to ask 15 questions about her ~groovy~ sense of style.

School and Major?

Barnard College ’20, Dance & Psychology

Hometown?

Honolulu, Hawai’i

Three hobbies?

Making crazy smoothie bowls, hiking around Hawai’i, and journaling.

Favorite quote?

“The body is a sacred garment.” -Martha Graham

Three words that describe your sense of style?

80s-inspired, quirky, and COMFORTABLE!

Most impactful influence on your style?

Most of my fashion inspiration comes from people watching, and picking up on style trends that I like.

Favorite place to shop?

Almost exclusively at thrift stores—my favorite is the East Village Thrift Shop on 12th St. I don’t shop at major retail stores anymore, in an effort to promote clothing recycling and to not support sweatshop-produced fast fashion lines.

Favorite colors to wear?

All the colors—I love patterns! But anything with shades of blue will catch my eye.

Closet staples?

Patterned pants, colorful leggings, and snapback hats!

Go-to makeup or hairstyles?

I’m not a huge makeup person, but when I do wear makeup, I go for a bright color around my eyes like pink or yellow, and some golden Glossier highlight. Recently I’ve been loving a good half-up high pony or double french braids for my hair.

Whose sense of fashion do you admire?

Sonya Tayeh has the most untouchable and unique fashion sense, and I dig everything she wears. She’s also a badass choreographer.

Fashion is…

…a powerful form of self expression. For me, it’s a way to explore my gender expression and also a way to connect with people who’s styles I admire.

What intersection with fashion are you most interested in?

I’m interested in how fashion and mental health overlap—for example, how a great outfit can boost self-confidence and how fashion/modeling can be at the forefront of social change by engaging people in discussions about body image.

If you could be any fashion brand/article of clothing, what would you be?

I’d be a suede pantsuit—saddling the feminine and androgynous border as well as classy and practical.

You just wake up and have ten minutes before class starts—what do you throw on?

I am most likely late for class, unless it’s a class I adore. In that case, mom jeans, a comfy cotton turtleneck and my trusty black boots!
